★ Guest Designer {Boys Rule Scrapbook Kits}

Happy Day to you all out there in the in scrappy land. Today I have a project to share with you based on a kit from Boys Rule Scrapbook Kits. Boys Rule is a Canadian Owned/Operated Kit Club out of Caledonia, Ontario. (It just so happens that they are also Sponsoring my Sketch Blog-Sketchabilities in three days.

"Kits designed with boys in mind, no flowers, nothing frilly or pretty, only grunge, dirt and smelly things..... packed perfectly in a box and mailed to your front door."

Laura Lee sent me an email asking me if i might be interested in Guest Designing for her for July & August, course i said YES, and she shipped my kit out that day. and it was in my hands within 24 hrs.

Boys Rule: Boys Rule Scrapbook Kits has matched masculine embellishments and awesome papers together to create a perfectly coordinated scrapbook kit for boy subjects.  Kits designed with boys in mind, no flowers, nothing frilly or pretty, only grunge, dirt and smelly things..... packed perfectly in a box and mailed to your front door.

Opening the kit, i found some Elles Studio, Simple Stories, Carta Bella Paper Pack, and alphabet stickers, embellishments and other coordinating elements for this kit. and here is what i came up with for my first project.

best brother main

yes you have likely seen that photo on some of my other projects, but to be honest, it really is my most favorite photo i have captured of my two boys.  Its amazing how as brothers, these two, in public, appear to be distant relatives, ( can you relate to that) LOL!!!   and not get along, but often times when it is just family, their love for one another comes shining through, so i have not lost hope that, one day, these two, will truly be, the best of friends.

To achieve this mixed media look on the white cardstock, i first painted (primed) the entire sheet of cardstock with white gesso, if you try and mist a white sheet of cardstock with glimmer mist, without first priming it, chances are, it will not look very pretty, and you will end up trashing that sheet. ( speaking from experience)

after the coat of gesso was dry, i added some corrugated cardboard, some unbleached canvas strips with were torn and that is what those hanging threads are. i thought they added some dimension and detail to the project so i left them. I misted with Trunk Bay Glimmer Mist and Crushed Shells glimmer mist from Tattered Angels, added more water and let the mist drip, i continued to do this until i achieved the depth of colour i wanted, dabbing off in between coats, and heat setting almost immediately after each colour coat. There are many layers of colour on the background,

here are some detail shots of the project.

drywall tape from the dollar store also added some texture and when primed, takes to glimmer mist really well.

the larger beach ball is from the carta bella sticker sheet and the two smaller ones were fussy cut from the border sheet, i added some glossy accents for dimension. (which were not quite dry in this photo)

to achieve my layers under my photo, i first decided on what side of photo to use, this one is a 4.75x6.75 which i cut down a bit from a 5x7.  i then pulled some papers from the Carta Bella Paper Pack and determined which colours i wanted to bring out, being this was a beach photo, i wanted to be sure to use blues to bring out the blues in the paper and some yellows and oranges. * this determined my mist colours of Trunk Bay and Crushed Shells.

see that little memo note that i cut from Elles Studio, well it is actually a hidden journalling tag.  I popped the umbrella with foam adhesive, cut out some banners from coordinating papers and then added part of the blue border from the sticker sheet.  love that Dude Button, i think i have to get some for future projects.

here is what the hidden journalling says.

i also cut further tiny tags from the Elles Studio elements and one of them was used as my title ( Best Brother) and others used as my sub titles. when my proejct was all adhered, i then went back in with more gesso, and added it where i felt i needed to soften the colour tones a bit. and i am thrilled at how this turned out :D

I hope my project has inspired you to get creative with this kit From Boys Rule! Stay Tuned for further projects coming from me this summer.

Thank you Laura Lee for the opportunity to design for Boys Rule!

Until Next Time, Happy Scrapping!
